SVG - Scalable Vector Graphics

Around the Spring of 2002, I came across a reference to an XML format for vector images called SVG. I experimented a bit and quickly became sold on the fact that SVG is extremely useful for all sorts of projects on the web.

  1. Since SVG is text, it can be generated dynamically by any coding language without proprietary libraries
  2. SVG is an open, license free standard
  3. SVG objects respond to JavaScript actions, making dynamic, interactive graphics very easy>
  4. The Adobe SVG viewer browser plugin has built in zooming and panning, making a rudimentary web GIS possible without server side components or Java applets.

Here are some links to SVG experiments of mine that serve as good examples for the use of SVG in dynamic graphics.
