Yellowstone National Park in SVG

The base SVG conversion was done through an export from the ArcGIS software. All in all, their implementation is very nice, unfortunately the export utility does some things that cause this file to be unnecessarily large and not very easy to use the layer controls seen in other implementations of web gis. Zoom in tight on one of the campsite symbols. See how it's made of a polygon path instead of a circle element. What's worse is that this symbol is redrawn from scratch at every point location, even though SVG allows us to define a symbol once and reapply it at new locations, saving lots of text. And look at the detail in the trails. Way too much for this application. Ideally, I think the converter should downselect the vertices of the lines and polygons wiht high resolution and convert native objects from general polygons to save file size. I've included group tags to enable me to add JavaScript controls in the near future.

Hold down < CTRL> to zoom in,< SHIFT> + < CTRL> to zoom out, and < ALT> to pan.

Perhaps this wouldn't be too difficult a process to implement fully for any SVG map that's produced. The result would be a quick web mapping export that looks very nice (depending on the users use of the GIS in the first place) and would be free to implement on any server, even one that the user had no server scripting permissions on. The other bad news is that Firefox's SVG support is limited at this point. The current release has native support, but don't expect it to be as thorough as the Adobe plugin. You'll still be able to use the plugin by switching a config parameter in Firefox.
